New year, new you – top hair trends for 2020

New year, new you – top hair trends for 2020

Not only are we in another year, but we’re also in another decade – and if that isn’t worthy of a new style, we don’t know what is. To help you tailor your look for the year ahead, we’ve delved into the top hair trend predictions for 2020.

So, put your bejeweled hair clips and velvet hairband away because we’ve got some new styles for you.

The jagged bob

Sleek and shiny bobs will be a thing of the past this year, as the new jagged bob strides onto the scenes. Also known as the choppy bob, this easy-care style incorporates jaw-reaching lengths, soft layers and lots of texture. It also looks stunning when teamed with golden highlights.

Contrasting colours

Flashes of colour won’t be a flash in the pan, according to our salon girls. We saw a peek of contrasting colour towards the end of last year, and it looks like this hair trend will take off. From chunky, face-framing streaks, to bold underlayer colours, this fun style works on lengths short and long. If you’re opting for this style, we recommend Redken Colour Extend for keeping your tones vibrant and fresh.

Curly highlights

Natural curls and waves took off big time in 2019, with curly hair influencers taking over Instagram and encouraging the natural look. As curly-haired girls and guys learn more about caring for their strands and enhancing hair health, we can expect healthy highlights to take off in 2020. Using a PH bonder and aftercare treatments, curls can be highlighted with care and shown off in colour.

Bold headbands

Chunky velvet headbands were all the rage in 2019, causing many us to delve into the loft in search of that one middle-school headband without our name emblazoned on it. This has ignited a follow-on trend in wedding hair, specifically big, bold and sparkly headbands. Embellished with pearls, diamantes, studs or flowers, these hair accessories look great with or without a veil and with hair up or down.

Super shades

Pantone may have narrowed down its colour of 2020 to Classic Blue, but in the hair industry, we love variety. This year expect to see shades ranging from silver-blonde and caramel browns to striking lilacs and rich reds. All protected with Redken Colour Extend, of course. And, if you don’t fancy a permanent colour change, you can try out our new Alchemic temporary colour conditioners from Davines (but more on that, in a later blog).

’80s combs

The 80s took over the catwalk last year, and this spring we’re preparing for a revival of the hair comb. Loosely inspired by Princess Diana (and many of our mums), these combs work great with gently brushed out hair, pulling into pack into place and injecting some volume. Just don’t forget the hairspray.

Extending lengths

Extensions will also make a big return this year, with improved products and techniques entering the market. Celebrity-favored brands such as Beauty Works will be in demand by everyone, thanks to their natural look and lasting-quality.

Those are our top predictions for 2020, what are yours?
